Housing and Dining Accommodations

Georgetown University is committed to making a reasonable effort to make appropriate adjustments that afford all students barrier free-access to University facilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Fair Housing Act. There is a process in place for requesting housing and dining accommodations on the basis of a medical condition or disability. Deadlines for housing accommodations are advertised through the Office of Residential Living. Announcements regarding deadlines are advertised on the Residential Living website and through emails to students. It is important to be in contact with the Academic Resource Center in advance of housing deadlines so that all requests can be carefully considered. Dietary Accommodations on the Basis of Disability or Religion

Georgetown is committed to supporting students’ health and well-being through on-campus dining options that promote access to a variety of healthy, fresh, and nutritious foods that meet students’ dietary needs. Georgetown requires all residential students to have a campus meal plan in order to support their on-campus living and learning success. Consistent access to a variety of nutritious foods is one of the foundations for successful learning and on-campus dining provides students with a source of community and shared experience. The University can meet the vast majority of students’ dining needs–including disability-related or religious dietary requirements–through its extensive dining options, or through reasonable accommodations. 

Students are eligible for reasonable accommodations if they have a disability, meaning a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Depending on the circumstances, this may include conditions such as severe allergies, gluten intolerance, diabetes, gastrointestinal conditions, etc. Students with qualifying religious observances may also receive dietary accommodations.

Onsite Registered Dietitian

We recognize the difficulties that students with dietary restrictions may face while navigating the dining halls. An onsite Registered Dietitian can provide students with support and education regarding how to successfully navigate their dietary needs within the dining halls. We encourage students to take advantage of this resource to gain a better understanding of their dining options on campus.

Request Process Overview

  1. All students who are requesting housing accommodations should complete the Academic Resource Center’s accommodation request form and should supply documentation from an appropriate healthcare provider that meets University guidelines.
    • If a student is requesting the same accommodation that they received in the past, they do not need to submit additional documentation.
    • Dietary Accommodation Requests: students who are requesting dietary accommodations must complete the Dining Accommodation Request Form. Students who are making housing accommodation requests with a dietary component must complete the Dining Accommodation Request Form and the housing accommodation request form. In both instances, students may be referred to the Registered Dietitian in Dining Services for a consultation about meal plan options, depending on the request.
  2. The ARC will use the student’s application form(s) and documentation to inform an accommodation decision. Please note that an ARC administrator may request to meet with a student if they have questions about a student’s request, or if they need additional information.
  3. Upon completing the review, the ARC will confirm via email that the student has completed their request.
  4. The ARC will notify Residential Living of students’ completed housing accommodation requests, which will be organized according to the following cycles for the 2024-2025 academic year:
    • The request process for disability housing accommodations for the 2024-2025 academic year will begin on November 6, 2023 and will extend through next year. Please be aware that as general housing selection progresses, space availability becomes more limited.
    • Students seeking disability housing accommodations should submit requests and required supporting documentation by the early action deadline of February 1, 2024. Completing requests by this deadline will allow sufficient time for the Academic Resource Center to review requests and for the Office of Residential Living to process administrative steps associated with approved accommodations prior to the start of general housing selection. Students who complete their requests by the early-action deadline of February 1, 2024 will receive their housing assignments prior to the start of general housing selection.
    • While requests for housing accommodations will be accepted and considered after February 1, 2024, requests completed after this date will be subject to housing availability, and the requested accommodation may not be immediately available. All requests submitted after this date will be reviewed on a rolling basis after the general housing selection process has concluded, and housing assignments for these requests will be communicated starting in June 2024.
  5. Residential Living will notify students of their placements according to the following timelines:
    • Students who apply before the early action deadline will be notified of their placements in mid-March before the formal selection process.
      • Students are encouraged to participate in the formal housing selection process until their accommodation assignment is offered.
    • Students who apply after the early action deadline will be notified of their placements on a rolling basis over the summer.
      • Note: Accommodation review and placements do not take place in the month of May due to spring closing and summer transition.

Early submission of requests and documentation is strongly encouraged, and all students should plan to participate in the general housing selection process unless notified otherwise by the Office of Residential Living.
